The concept of sustainable development is not just a passing trend.
It is rather a mindset, a series of collective measures aimed at preserving natural and human capital. Its official definition describes development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Brundtland Commission).
Sustainable development encompasses four dimensions: economic, social, governance (or equity), and environmental. According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the very notion of sustainable development emphasizes the connections between these dimensions and the necessity of maintaining a balance among them.
